Overview
This annual class is our chance to get together to learn about Java Web Development. In 2010, we will cover the following topics over a 15 week period, meeting one night a week:
- HTML / XML Basics
- A Brief History of Web Development
- Java Servlet API
- JavaServer Pages (JSP) API, including using JSP EL and JSTL
- A Little About Other frameworks: Struts 1.3.x, JavaServer Faces (JSF) 1.1/1.2, and Grails 1.1/1.2
- Introduction to the Spring Framework
- Spring MVC
- Spring Web Flow
- Integrating jQuery and AJAX
Meeting Details
All classes will be held in the Objistics training lab in St. Peters at 1405 Jungermann Road, Suite B, Saint Peters, MO 63376. (For a map, go to Google Maps and enter Objistics for the search term.)
On Wednesday, 27 January of 2010 at 6:00pm, we'll hold a kick-off meeting of the Gateway JUG Java Web Developer group study class. At this meeting, we'll
- Discuss the class syllabus
- Discuss food and refreshment options (soft drinks, coffee, water, snacks will be provided by Objistics)
- Start the overview of Java Web Development
Meetings will generally run from 6:00pm - 9:00pm every Wednesday night.
Note: Because of my current on-site project commitment, the office may not be open until 5:30pm - 5:45pm, so please don't arrive too early and have to wait for me to get there to open up! ... jf
General Info
The textbook will be Spring In Action, 3rd Edition (not yet published), but will be provided by Objistics.
Supplemental reading will also be assigned. We'll use the Eclipse IDE (or variant).
Generally, the class will be 50/50 Lecture and Lab, with all labs done in Pair Programming fashion. Each week, a reading assignment will be made through our Gateway JUG Group Study Google Group.
As this is an advanced class, all participants must have successfully completed our Gateway JUG Agile Java class OR an equivalent class from elsewhere OR be working as a Java developer.
Registration
To register for the class, first, send an e-mail to president-AT-gatewayjug.org indicating your intention to attend. Be sure to look for a response to verify it was received.
Then, click on the PayPal button below to pay the $249 lab fee. If you'd prefer to pay by check, please bring a check payable to 'Objistics' on the first night of the class. Only those who have paid for the class will receive a textbook.

The lab fee is due on or before class start date. Seating is limited. Paid registrations will take precedence over verbal/email stated intentions to register.
