How To Learn And Use Java™
To Make And Save Money!

In 2006, 2007, and into the foreseeable future, learning and mastering Java™ is a sure bet to professional and financial success for software developers, architects, and companies wanting to leverage their Information Technology investment.

For instance, the 2004 Software Development magazine salary survey indicated the average Java™ staff developer salary was $83,000 and managers averaged $102,000. Now that's not a bad return on your learning investment!

If you're passionate about learning and mastering Java™, and the many interesting tools and APIs for Java™, the Gateway JUG is for you because we're passionate about it, too.

We're not just passionate about Java™ because virtually every Fortunate 1000 company uses it - offering us plenty of opportunities. (Well, maybe that little one in Redmond, WA doesn't use Java™ a lot. Or maybe they do?)

We're not just passionate about Java™ because every major operating system has a 100% compatible, Sun certified Java™ Virtual Machine (JVM) - allowing architects and CIOs the widest latitude of choices for hosting their applications. (And letting developers code with their Macs even if the app will be hosted on Windows!)

We're not just passionate about Java™ because every major college and university teaches Java™, thousands of companies teach courses in Java™, and publishers routinely release dozens of new books on Java™ every year - making it easy for us to learn and grow with Java™.

Of course, we're not just passionate about Java™ because it's 100% FREE, as are leading Java™ tools, APIs, and server components - making it easy for even the smallest shops to adopt Java™ and the largest shops to stretch their shrinking budgets.

We're passionate about Java™ because it's a truly great programming language and platform for handling a wide range of computing problems, from small to large. The real value of Java™: Learn Once, Code Anywhere.

We're Passionate About Java™ - Because You Are

Honestly, our target audience isn't the person who wants to learn just enough Java™ to code quietly for 35 hours a week and never learn anything more. He'll make a good living, but not a very good Gateway JUG member.

Our target audience is you - a person who wants to continually learn about Java™ and related topics to become the best software developer, architect, and project manager possible.

Java™ Isn't Perfect

We don't believe Java™ is a perfect language or platform. Any number of other languages offer some benefits in some ways for some problem domains.

It's just that Java™ is so broadly useful, we can leverage our learning investment in so many useful ways without having to switch between small, arcane languages to solve tiny pieces of the programming puzzle.

Is The Gateway JUG For You?

Whether you are a student, professional developer, architect, or project manager, the Gateway JUG is here for you. Our #1 goal to provide training in Java™ topics that are useful to you.

The Gateway JUG is the area's only vendor-neutral Java™ user group chartered as a Missouri Nonprofit Corporation, governed by an independent, member-elected Board of Directors and operated under member-approved Bylaws. The Gateway JUG was formed to promote and advance the use of the Java™ platform through research, education, social activities, and community outreach.

And that's what we do.

We hold meetings the first Tuesday of each month from 6pm - 8pm at the Lutheran Hours Ministry Building at Hwy 40 & Mason Road. (Need directions?) Our monthly meetings are always free and open to the public.

They cover general interest topics on Java™ APIs, tools, and methodologies, presented so that beginners and advanced developers alike can take something away from the presentation. Since the meetings are held during the dinner hour, the JUG provides some light refreshments for all attendees. Also, we regularly offer door prizes. For more information, see our Meetings page.
