You are cordially invited to our next Gateway JUG meeting on May 5, 2009 at 6:00pm
Wenjie He will be discussing an interesting topic called "Geocoding".
The basic geocoding process is that for a given street address or a zip code, the associated geographic coordinates (often expressed as latitude and longitude) are provided by a geocoding service. Many companies need this kind of service to help their customers locate their nearby businesses, such as car dealerships, restaurants, and pharmacies. The geocoding service is usually delivered through a set of APIs. For example, Google provides a set of JavaScript-based APIs at the client side. Mapquest provides a set of Java-based APIs at the server side.
In this presentation, Wenjie will explain the concept of geocoding first. Then he will describe the procedure for integrating the geocoding service into a web application. He will use the Pharmacy Locator project that he is doing for Express Scripts in his class this semester at UMSL to illustrate the use of geocoding service. He will compare the following three ways that are commonly used to provide the geocoding services:
1) JavaScript-based approach
2) Java-based approach
3) Web services-based approach
Please RSVP to rsvp@gatewayjug.org with name, company, and email if you plan to attend. Hope to see you all there!
